Chile began the first day of the New Year with a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. (Let's hope it isn't an indication of the year to come). The epicenter was located in the same region that experienced massive devastation from an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and tsunami less than a year ago. However, thankfully this time power outages were minor. "Power generators in Chile learned a lot from the earthquake that shook the country February 27 of last year," a spokesman from AES Gener told Inside Coal. "We've enacted new regulations and adopted procedures designed to increase stability at existing plants and bolster safety and stability at new plants under construction."
