Wear properties of SiC particulate reinforced aluminum composite

In the present study, wear properties of cast Al-SiCpcomposites were characterized. Wear tests were performed as afunction of test conditions including applied load, sliding speedand sliding distance under dry wear condition employing a block-on-roller type wear test machine. Wear mechanism of Al-SiCpcomposites was also investigated by the analysis of worn surfacesand wear debris. Results show that wear resistance of Al alloy isimproved with reinforcement of SiCp especially with severer wearconditions such as high applied load and long sliding distance.Weight loss of Al-SiCp composites almost linearly increases withapplied load and sliding distance. There exists a transition point ofwear behavior at which a minimum wear rate encountered in termsof the sliding speed. Wear mechanism is abrasive at the low speedand at the transition speed, and adhesive/abrasive wear at the highspeed range. It was found that uniform distribution of SiCpreinforcement is desirable to improve the wear resistance of Al-SiCp composites.
