CONSOL Energy posts robust earnings in second quarter despite problems at Buchanan

CONSOL Energy posted earnings of 41.1 million dollars (0.44 dollars/diluted share) during the second quarter, compared to 26.2 million dollars during the same time last year. "Our top and bottom line improvements this quarter were driven primarily by higher coal prices consistent with the strong energy fundamentals that have persisted for more than a year and the higher production capacity in coal resulting from our recent expansion projects," J. Brett Harvey, president and CEO of CONSOL said. "We improved second quarter earnings by nearly 57 percent compared with a year earlier despite the loss of coal and gas production because of the Buchanan mine fire as well as the costs associated with the fire."
