Canada's Westshore Terminals handled 5.4 millon tonnes of coal in the third quarter compared to 5.3 million tonnes during the third quarter of 2008. Westshore expects its throughput to total 20 million tonnes in 2009, compared to 21.1 million tonnes in 2008. The Alabama State Port Authority is tightening the budget at the Port of Mobile. The Authority recently approved a US$53 million budget for 2010, less than a third of what was alloted in 2009's budget. One of the big ticket items in the 2010 budget is US$4 million for upgrades to the McDuffie Coal Terminal. The Authority said it is expecting financial losses in excess of US$15 million for FY2009. Coal traffic, which accounts for about half of the port's business, has been down significantly.
