Studies on the influence of barrier/trap crops on the incidence of Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) in kharif maize were conducted at Ludhiana (Punjab) during kharif2006 and 2007. Maize variety, Kesri was sown along with row/s of bajra, teosinte, Napier bajra hybrid (NBH) and sorghum each as barrier/trap. The planting of barrier/ trap rows on either side of the maize plots proved effective with respect to maize stem borer incidence under natural infestation and subsequently increased the maize yield. Amongall the barrier/ trap row treatments, maize crop with two rows of NBH as a barrier/trap rows on either side had minimum incidence (4.45%) of maize stem borer and followed by 1 row of NBH (6.36%), 1 row of teosinte (6.78%) and 2 rows of bajra (7.-93%) ascompared with maize crop (15.29%) without any barrier row. The maximum pest incidence was recorded in maize plot with 2 rows of sorghum (12.51%) as barrier rows. The maximum yield of 21.62 q/ha was obtained in maize plot with 2 rows of NBH and followed by 1 row of NBH, 2 rows of bajra and 1 row of teosinte (20.9,19.94 and 19.51 q/ha, respectively) than maize crop (17.14 q/ha) without barrier/trap row. The minimum yield (17.45 q/ha) was obtained in maize plot with 2 rows of sorghum as barriers and was onpar with the maize crop without any barrier/trap row.
