The integrated pest management (IPM) module developed for effective management of insect pests of basmati rice was implemented and evaluated in two districts of Punjab during 2008 and 2009. Adoption of IPM technology effectively reduced insect pests incidence in adopted villages and increased the average net returns of the farmers. Stem borers incidence was low in IPM villages (0.54 to 0.82% dead hearts and 1.6 to 1.9% white ears) as compared to non-IPM villages (1.66 to 2.50% dead hearts and 4.6 to5.4% white ears) during both the years. The leaf folder damage ranged from 3.28 to 4.4 per cent damaged leaves in IPM villages compared to 7.41 to 10.4 per cent in non-IPM villages. The population of natural enemies was higher in IPM fields (0.59-0.83/plant) compared to non-IPM fields (0.08-0.32/ plant). Adoption of IPM technology reduced the number of insecticide sprays in IPM villages (3.4 and 3.2) over non-IPM villages (5.7 and 5.3) during both the years. Average basmati yield in IPM villages increased by 12.95 and 11.46 per cent over the non-IPM villages during 2008 and 2009, respectively. Adoption of IPM technology by basmati growing farmers of the two districts resulted in an overall additional profit of Rs 13,439/ha over non-IPM practices.
