The failure to relieve pain in a timely manner is potentially debilitating for the patient and is often frustrating for both the patient and physician. Having a genetic or biochemical marker that would predict a pharmacologic agent's efficacy with a high degree of success would add a very powerful approach toward improving the treatment of pain.
