Scientific Integrity: A Matter of Leadership, Ethics, and Research Translation

Well-known scandals in private business entities such as Enron and the current British Petroleum oil disaster in the United States speak to the essence of integrity, the importance of leadership, and the characteristics or attributes of leaders in shaping public trust and confidence in the service and delivery of public goods. Brown and Trevifio (2006) candidly ask, "What is wrong with our leaders?" As a key enterprise in the public's health, research seems far removed from these scurrilous events-but is it? Shamoo and Resnick (2003) note, "the modern age is a scientific age" (p. 9) that carries tremendous power and prestige. Every day, millions of scientists are conducting research in both private and public settings (Shamoo 8c Resnick, 2003). As such, scientists bear an unprecedented level of public responsibility.
