Improving Explosives User Safety by Introducing Regulation Awareness Training

The commercial explosives industry is subject to the laws of multiple jurisdictions, which means that several regulatory agencies are responsible for governing various aspects of the industry. Since the explosives industry is ever-changing, regulations and educational material must also evolve in order to accommodate industry needs. Particularly, blasters need interactive educational programs which are relevant, comprehensive, and accessible. A smartphone application has been developed using the Adobe Captivate? software package. This package allows designers to easily organize information such that the product interface is responsive to user interaction.This innovation lends itself to effective question and answer styles of training. Furthermore, this application illustrates how industry professionals may integrate new technologies to communicate ideas, research, and training materials. This application organizes federal regulations relevant to professional blasters, namely CFRTitle 27, Chapter 2, Part 555, with respect to commerce in the explosive industry and Title 30 with respect to loading, blasting, and security. Unrevised and unedited federal regulations are presented to the user. After the user has finished viewing each topic, a brief interactive quiz appears so that they may continuously gauge comprehension and retention. Quizzes appear mainly in the form of "multiple choice" and "complete the missing-phrase" styles of questions. Once a user has completed the minicourse, an auto-generated percentage of correctly-provided answers is displayed.
