In order to assess the allelopathic potential of annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum L.) (ARG) against wheat a root exudates bioassay was conducted using the equal-compartment-agar method. The allelopathic effects of ARG at different growing times (2,4,6,8, 11 and 15 days) were investigated on wheat seedling growth response. Results indicated that the co-growth of ARG and wheat induced wheat root and shoot dry matter reduction. ARG growth for 6-8 days had the most inhibitive effect on wheat root dry matter. Increasing ARG density beyond 16 and 35 plants per beaker had no significant further effect on wheat root and shoot dry matter, respectively. The allelopathic effect of ARG root exudates was evaluated on four wheat cultivars, namely WW14192, Ventura,Sunco and Janz that differed significantly. The greatest allelopathic impact was noticed on root and shoot growth of cultivarWW14192, though the trends were similar for all cultivars.
