The technical system of rainwater collection, storage and pumping for drip irrigation was tested in the greenhouses belonging to the Research and Development Station for Vegetable Growing of Buzau within the Academy of Agricultural and Forest Sciences of Bucharest. The experimental design included a network of water collecting pipes on the roof of the greenhouse, a water storage basin and a water pumping unit. Rainfall was the water resource for the experimental variant. In the classical variant, the groundwater was used for irrigation. The quantitative potential of rainwater resource in Buzau zone is 516 mm with a mean of 328.4 mm in the warm season. In the climatic conditions specific for the year 2007, appreciated as extremely droughty, rainfall was in average 229.4 mm for the interval of the first 7 months, monthly 32.8 mm monthly with a variation interval of 8.2-72.2 mm. The quality of irrigation water, which resulted from rainfall and groundwater, was estimated according to the content of main anions and cations. The quality of rainwater (with low salt content) was higher than that of the groundwater (with moderate - high salt content). The system behaved well and the crop yield (yellow melon) was by 9.2% higher when irrigated with rainwater, compared with groundwater.
