Impact of environmental factors on important economic and reeling parameters of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. breeds/hybrids.

Effect of environmental factors on some important economic and reeling parameters of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. breeds/hybrids were studied to assess the potential breeds/hybrids during the adverse climatic condition prevailing in West Bengal. Nistari indigenous breed could be reared in all the commercial seasons of silkworm rearing in West Bengal for assured crop enterprise. However, in terms of qualitative & quantitative parameters it was found to be inferior compared to bivoltines and their hybrids. Bivoltines and their hybrid showed better performances with respect to economic and reeling parameters in favourable seasons. However, in unfavourable seasons hybrid of bivoltine shows comparatively higher ERR% and also better both in quantity and quality of silk compared to pure breeds. Hence, hybrid of bivoltine could be reared in unfavourable seasons for commercial seed purposes, which is more essential in tropical sericultural enterprise especially, in Eastern and North Eastern India.
