Detection of a new OsHV-1 DNA strain in the healthy Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, from the Gulf of California

In Mexico, the culture of the Pacic oyster, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, began in Baja California Sur at the beginning of the 1970s, and now it is cultivated in all the coastal states of northwestern Mexico. The native oyster species Crassostrea corteziensis Hertlein and the clam Chione uctifraga Sowerby are cultured at a smaller scale in some states. Since 1997, massive mortalities that were recurrent until 2009 threatened the Pacic oyster cultures in Mexico, affecting the spat, juvenile and adult organisms, and had a greater impact on the cultures in Sonora and Baja California Sur (Ca′ceres-Mart′nez & Va′squez-Yeomans 2003).
