Comparative biochemical indices of fetal fluids in normal foaling and stressful delivery in Indian Thoroughbred mares.

Biochemical parameters were measured in the amniotic and allantoic fluids from 11 mares with normal parturition and 11 mares with difficult/stressful foaling (dystocia). Significant differences between the 2 groups were observed in bilirubin, alkaline and acid phosphatases and lactate dehydrogenase. There was significant variation in the values of transaminases, esterases, creatine, urea nitrogen, glucose, sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus in both the amniotic and allantoic fluids of each group. Variation in the biochemical indices was attributed to fetal struggle and stress during dystocia.
