If you have ever wondered what training a paramedic undergoes, this book will give you the answer. Although Emergency Care: A Textbook for Paramedics is a textbook for prehospital care in the United Kingdom, it generally parallels the prehospital curriculum in the United States. As such, it also serves as a good review of general emergency care.This soft-cover reference text is written in a style slightly different than most medical textbooks in that each chapter contains all of the essential information for the topic covered, independent from other chapters. This style allows the reader to use each chapter as a separate text without reading other portions of the book. Because of this design, some content is repeated if the book is read sequentially. It is separated into 12 major sections, and the glossaries and index are well constructed and quite comprehensive. The content is easy to read, worded in a style analogous to an informal conversation, but sometimes can be brassy in its examples, such as describing how the "common distaste for individuals who abuse alcohol" have led to deaths because "ambulance staff did not wish to burden themselves or hospital staff with their treatment" (p. 593) in the portion of the chapter about ethical issues discussing making assumptions.
