Genetic variability, character association and component analysis in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) under rainfed condition

To asses the extent of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance per cent in eight cytoplasmic genetic male sterile hybrids of upland cotton evaluated in RBD with three replications at RRTTS, Bhawanipatna, revealed that the GCV, heritability in broad sense and genetic advance as per cent of mean values were comparatively high for yield/plant (g), seed cotton yield/ha (q), number of monopodia/plant, seeds/boll, seeds/locule and boll weight (g) indicating the operation of additive gene action for these traits. The correlation analysis indicated that number of sympodia/plant (0.917) and number of bolls/plant (0.964) had positive and significant correlation, while locules/boll had negative and significant association with seed cotton yield/plant. Path coefficient analysis revealed that bolls/plant (0.997) and fibre strength (0.382) should be given greater emphasis in cotton yield improvement programme as well as for modern ginning and spinning mills as it contributes maximum direct effect,while number of sympodia/plant contributed maximum indirect effect through the trait bolls/plant.
