Association analysis of yield and fibre quality characters in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Correlation and path coefficient analysis have been worked out for 16 characters in 60 genotypes of upland cotton. Correlation studies indicated that plant height, monopodia/plant, sympodia/plant, bolls/ plant, boll weight, seed index, lint index andlint yield/plant recorded significant positive association with seed cotton yield/plant. Further partitioning of correlation coefficients into direct and indirect effects showed that characters sympodia/plant, bolls/plant, boll weight, seed index and lint yield/plant had positive direct effect on seed cotton yield/plant. The correlation and path analysis therefore clearly indicated that direct selection based on sympodia/plant, bolls/plant, boll weight, seed index and lint yield/plant may be helpful indeveloping high seed cotton yield varieties in upland cotton.
