Twenty nine upland cotton (G. hirsutumL.) genotypes were studied to observe the genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance in yield, yield contributing and fibre quality characters. The analysis of variance revealed that the sufficient variability was present in the material studied for all the characters. The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was slightly higher in magnitude than genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) for all the characters indicating the influence of environment. The highest heritability estimates in broad sense were recorded for 2.5 per cent span length. Whereas high heritability was observed for all the other characters except sympodia/plant and days to 50 per cent flowering. The high estimates of heredity coupled with high genetic advance were observed for the traits like, seed cotton yield/plant and plant height.
