Complexity has been used previously in management applications that have focused on assessing the relative difficulty in understanding, operating, and managing services, equipment, and systems. A particularly interesting model in project management evaluates the size, complexity, and risks of a project. That model consists of calculating a complexity index through the evaluation of several criteria including project cost, team size, customer demand, business impact, technology requirements, and others. According to the index value, the project can be classified as low, medium, or high complexity. This classification is intended to assist in the management of projects based on their level of complexity in view of minimizing risk. The area of software engineering has been highly interested in developing software complexity models. Through the provision of quantitative methods to predict a system's design, implementation, and maintenance, software complexity has the purpose of developing a basis for cost reduction over the lifetime of the system.
