Monitoring vital signs with the help of a simple video camera and complex algorithms could take telemedicine to a new level, say the researchers who have devised and studied the technique. And it is done without touching the patient.The video camera, paired with the algorithms, appears to provide an inexpensive and accurate means of monitoring heart and respiration rates day or night, according to the researchers. They also outline potential implications for telemedicine, including enabling rapid detection of a heart attack or stroke occurring at home and helping avoid sudden infant death syndrome.The researchers are based at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Georgia Regents University in Augusta, Georgia. They published the results of their research in the online journal FLOS ONE, an international peer-reviewed, open-access publication featuring primary research from any scientific discipline.
