Benefits of the European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refractive Surgery to an ophthalmology trainee: How an ophthalmology trainee used EUREQUO to audit their surgical training

The purpose of the European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (EURE-QUO) is twofold: to help individual surgeons improve the quality of their surgery through audit1 and to develop and maintain evidence-based guidelines for cataract surgery based on EUREQUO data.Audit and quality improvement in cataract surgery should start early during training and not only after the trainee has qualified as an independent surgeon. Keeping a surgical logbook is a mandatory part of the training of cataract surgeons in many parts of the world. However, at present, most surgical logbooks serve only as a record of operations performed, not of their outcomes.3 Even in cases in which limited outcome data entry is available, the user's surgical outcomes cannot be compared with those of other users of trainee or independent surgeon status using the logbook software. As a result, current surgical logbooks do not lend themselves to continuous audit of cataract surgery outcomes.
