Plea for femtosecond laser pre-treatment and cataract surgery in the same room

When femtosecond laser technology was introduced into cataract surgery by Nagy et al.1 about 5 years ago, some of us thought it would turn out to be a nice new technology for patients bent on perfection, a tool for premium surgery leading to the implantation of premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), but we soon learned to appreciate the potential, the versatility of this new instrument. For those of us who use the femtosecond laser daily, it seems to be the hallmark of a new age in cataract surgery itself, a breakthrough similar to Ridley's first IOLs in the late 1940s and Kelman's invention of phacoemulsification in the late 1960s/early 1970s.
