摘要

This commentary will dwell upon two main themes. Firstly, the importance of this subject area and the urgent need for robust research into behavioural aspects of patient self-management will be emphasized. Secondly, issues related to the design and analysis of results of this study will be commented upon. There is now robust evidence to confirm that good self-management leads to improved diabetes outcomes and Whittemore et al. (2005) cite important studies on this subject. The day-to-day management of diabetes is the responsibility of people with the condition yet those with Type 2 diabetes often experience great difficulty with self-management. The authors have selected diet and exercise behaviour as key variables in the self-management of Type 2 diabetes. These behaviours are indeed fundamental to the achievement of satisfactory metabolic control, yet our ability to understand them or to promote them effectively amongst this patient group is limited.
