The errors involved in measuring the radii of curvature of the surfaces in a surface force apparatus are analyzed. They are found to always lead to an overestimate of the surface free energy, but they are small and may be eliminated altogether by placing in the optical path a dovetail prism that may be rotated about the optical axis.
