Although head-to-head comparisons between Abbott Real-Time HIV-1 viral load assay on the m2000sp/rt (ART/m2000) and the Roche COBAS Ampliprep/COBAS TaqMan HIV-1 Test v2.0 (CAP/CTM2.0) have demonstrated good correlation [1,2] in EDTA/whole blood samples, this comparison has not been performed with PPT samples. These collection tubes are commonly used in remote sites in Canada, where standard centrifugation and separation of whole blood samples into EDTA plasma is impractical. One possible difference between the two assays is that a previous version of the CAP/CTM2.0 was able to detect latent proviral HIV-1 DNA as well as HIV-1 RNA [3], whilst the ART/m2000 extraction favours HIV-1 RNA [4].
