The addition of Grignard reagents to highly hindered acylferrocenes in the presence of anhydrous CeCI3 at room temperature provided the corresponding a-ferrocenyl tertiary alcohols FcC(OH)R~1R~2 (R~1 = Ph or Fc, R~2=Me, Et, ~iPr,~nBu, Ph; Fc=C_5H_4FeC_5H_5)in moderate to high yields. Optimum conditions and factors affecting the reaction were investigated.
