Efficient synthesis of a-ferrocenyl tertiary alcohols via CeCl_3-promoted addition of Grignard reagents to large hindered ketones

The addition of Grignard reagents to highly hindered acylferrocenes in the presence of anhydrous CeCI3 at room temperature provided the corresponding a-ferrocenyl tertiary alcohols FcC(OH)R~1R~2 （R~1 = Ph or Fc, R~2=Me， Et， ~iPr，~nBu， Ph； Fc=C_5H_4FeC_5H_5）in moderate to high yields. Optimum conditions and factors affecting the reaction were investigated.
