Traumatic mydriasis: 'cat's eye' in a football player.

Nonphysiologic mydriasis or pupillary dilation most commonly results from drugs used for eye exams. However, mydriasis can result from a traumatic injury to the eye or indirectly from head trauma.7 Mydriasis also may be caused by a ciliary spasm. Other causes include parasympathetic overactivity or sympathetic underactiv-ity. The dilator muscle or the sphincter muscle of the iris may also be involved. In most cases, the changes are permanent, although the injury may resolve over time in rare individuals, as it did in this football player.
