Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometers commonly acquire a "background" signal, which is then used to correct sample signals for absorption bands due to atmospheric water and carbon dioxide. At a resolution of 1 cm~(-1), typical of moderately priced instruments used in undergraduate chemistry, much of the rotational structure of the CO_ asymmetric stretch fundamental band near 2350 cm~(-1) can be resolved, as noted in Figure 1.
