Many research laboratories are now usng the scanning tunneling microscope(STM)to study details of surface structure and reactions(1).While becoming a standard piece of research equipment,it has also been introduced as a teaching tool.A number of articles in this Journal have described student laboratory experiments using the STM(2-5).
