Education in Cuba is a national priority. In 1961, the government launched a campaign to raise the level of literacy in Cuba. Schools throughout the country were closed for eight months and 268,400 individuals, of whom only 34,00.0 were teachers, were recruited to go to inner cities, rural towns, and villages in the provinces to teach reading.
