A Method for Generating Oxygen from Consumer Chemicals

In connection with our ongoing effort to develop chemical demonstrations using consumer chemicals for public audiences, and particularly for primary-and secondary-school audiences, we have developed a series of reactions that demonstrate combustion in oxygen gas. We prepare the oxygen gas as needed in the bottles used to demonstrate the combustion reactions, using only consummer-available chemicals purchased at a supermarket and found in the home. Such a demonstration should eliminate the need for laboratory apparatus, mitigate otential legal issues surrounding the transportation of chemicals or compressed gas, and simplify the disposal of waste. Teachers or demonstrators that have no access to common laboratory equipment could also perform such a reaction. The use of consumer products also permits stimulating reacations to be carried out in distance-learning situations.
