A case of a ruptured submucosal aneurysm of the small intestine identified using double-balloon enteroscopy

In recent years, small bowel enteroscopy has allowed identification of various vascular abnormalities that can cause hematochezia in the small intestine. Of these, Dieulafoy's lesion, which is regarded as a cirsoid aneurysm with a flat appearance, is sometimes observed using small bowel enteroscopy. However, ruptured submucosal aneur-ysms are very rarely observed in the small intestine. To our knowledge, only a few reports have described the endo-scopic findings of this disease. We encountered a rare case of ruptured submucosal aneurysm of the small intestine that was identified using double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE). In the present report, we describe the details of our patient and the endoscopic findings of the disease, and discuss the distinguishing features between ruptured submucosal aneurysms and Dieulafoy's lesion of the small intestine.
