摘要

The noted historian Michael Bliss, PhD (University Professor Emeritus of the University of Toronto) is an award-winning author of several books, including biographies about prominent physicians such as William Osier, Harvey Cushing, and Frederick Banting. Now, based upon his 2008 Joanne Goodman Lectures at the University of Western Ontario, Bliss has prepared an engaging synopsis of his works. This short text weaves the Canadian-American connection during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that propelled the center of medical science from Great Britain and Europe to North America, particularly the United States. The story begins in 1885 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with the deadly smallpox epidemic, that was mostly the result of an anti-vaccination movement among the poor French-Canadians.
