摘要

The impact of chemical substances on human health and the environment is a subject that has attracted considerable attention from society and policymakers since the 1950s and 1960s. Legislative initiatives worldwide, such as the new EU policies under development for chemicals (Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals, REACH), will affect the wider chemical industry. Specifically, the pharmaceutical industry will have to contend with legislation, much of which is new (European Union) or evolving (Japan and Canada), for the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of human and veterinary drugs and for feed additives during drug registration.
