Texts as wide-ranging as Proverbs and the works of Shakespeare have been read for keys to the how of building a successful, small business. We decided to approach the topic in a less global way, though. We queried members of the Cleaning Equipment Trade Association (CETA) with experience in building a successful business. A product and/or a service - good ones - are certainly key elements for a great company. Yet the day-to-day plan for sustaining and growing a business demands attention to financial and technical details. It also requires immersion in the manufacturing sector and ties to colleagues. And yes, competitors are colleagues, too. So, let's take a look at some of the particulars - the keys - in that order. Cash flow, access to credit, and payments outstanding are just some of the mix of financial information that determines the health of a business. Grappling with financial data compartmentally or intermittently is not an ideal approach, especially in the age of instantaneous money transfers.
