Society of Biology: influencing government policies

As all teachers in England and Wales will be aware, school education is currently at an important junction following the publication of the Department for Education’s Schools White Paper, The importance of teaching, in November 2010. Subsequently the Department for Education announced a full review of the National Curriculum (from ages 5 to 16) on 20 January 2011 and the first phase of the review will encompass the Government’s core subjects: English, maths, science and physical education – all for first teaching in 2013. The second phase will additionally look at which other subjects should be included in the core National Curriculum.
