Taxonomic status of Schaefferia emucronata Absolon, 1900 and Schaefferia willemi (Bonet, 1930) (Collembola, Hypogastruridae) in the light of hybridisation studies

The possibilities of hybridisation between two problematic species S emucronata and S. willemi under natural and experimental conditions were studied. Field studies showed, that probability of natural hybridisation between individuals from studied sympatric populations is low. Spatial isolation resulting from different and specific habitat preferences of these populations prevented hybridisation. Experimental investigations showed limited ability of studied populations to hybridisation. Exclusively female S. willemi x male S. emucronata crosses produced some viable, but sterile hybrids. All these data showed that S. emucronata and S. willemi are "good" and probably closely related species.
