A new study documents the path of mercury emissions from human sources, to water sources, into food supplies.The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) research specifically focused on mercury emissions originating in Asia, traveling through the Pacific Ocean where it contaminates tuna and other seafood. Consumption of ocean fish and shellfish accounts for more than 90 percent of human mercury exposure, and tuna from the Pacific Ocean accounts for 40 percent of that exposure.
