Water quality and composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton of the river Pila Salunki have been studied through periodical surveys during 2012. The mean values of water temperature, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, primary productivityand plankton density were recorded as 24.7±8.3°C, 8.6±0.3, 143.1±26.3 NTU,6.0±0.8 ppm, 99.5±18.0 ppm, 41.5±30.5 mg.c./m3/hr and 41.9±22.5 individuals/ml respectively. A total of 25 species of phytoplankton belonging to Bacillariophycae (12spp.),Chlorophycae (7spp.,), Cynophycae (5 spp.,), Eugenophycae (1 sp.) and 13 species of zoo plankton belonging to Protozoa ( 4 spp.,), Rotifers (2 spp.,), Copepods (5 spp.,) and Cladocera (2 spp.,) were identified during the period of study. Among these groups, Bacillariophycae constituted nearly 73.1% followed by Chloropycae (19.4%), Cynophcae (4.7%) and Euglenophcae (2.8%). Chloropycae continued to occur in high percentage in pre-monsoon, monsoon and in post-monsoon months at varied percentage. Similarlyamong zoo plankton, Copepods constituted nearly 63.0% followed by Protozoan (18.0%), Rotifers (12.5%) and Cladocera (6.5%) at varied percentage. Copepods made its occurrence in all seasons recording highest percentage in monsoon (77.8%) followed by pre-monsoon (66.7%) and least in monsoon (44.4%) only. Shannon's index of diversity recorded very low values between 0.39 and 1.07 and Simpson's index of dominance varied from 0.09 to 0.21 indicating poor diversity and dominance in the river system.
