Contributions of Chang Pei-kang to development economies

This paper comments on the theories of the industrialization of agricultural countries or developing countries advanced systematically by Chang Pei-kang in 1940s, from the point of view of the emergence and evolution of the development economics and from the angle of the combination of these theories and the practice of the developing countries, especially China. These theories comprise: (1) interdependence of agriculture and industry; (2) unique and comprehensive definition of industrialization; (3) "pioneer" function of infrastructure and basic industries in industrialization; (4) generating and limiting factors in industrialization; (5) sequence, stages and speed of industrialization; (6) effects of industrialization on agricultural production and on surplus farm labor; (7) foreign capital introduction and foreign trade. They contributed much to the early development economics.
