Music therapy within a palliative setting has been shown to be of benefit for people with a terminal illness, providing some comfort and relief for both their physical and psycho-social needs. For nurses working within palliative care, this holistic approach to providing care is of great importance for both the person with a terminal illness and their family members. This systematic review explores the evidence for the use of music therapy for the adults undergoing palliative care.Both quantitative descriptive studies and qualitative studies were considered initially for inclusion in this review, but the quantitative studies did not meet the inclusion criteria. Participants were adults who were terminally ill and receiving palliative care, either in a hospital, hospice, nursing home or in their own home. Three qualitative studies met the inclusion criteria, and were assessed as being of high methodological quality. Methodologies included an interpretative approach, a phenomenological approach and a modified grounded theory with content analysis. There were two synthesized findings from the meta-synthesis.
