In May of 2003 an intensive field campaign was conducted at the Central Facility of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program's Southern Great Plains (SGP) Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) site near Lamont,Oklahoma.The CART site is a heavily instrumented research facility making routine,continuous surface and airborne in situ aerosol,remote-sensing aerosol,and column radiation measurements.Two objectives of this experiment included an attempt to obtain closure between measurements and models of diffuse radiation using accurate measurements of the aerosol single scattering albedo and an attempt to obtain closure between column aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and Raman lidar and in situ aerosol extinction profiles.During this experiment,the routine measurements were augmented by additional aircraft and surface measurement platforms,and research missions were coordinated with satellite overpasses.In this paper,in situ aerosol measurements are discussed.
