Bioaerosols as carriers of radioactive nuclides and trace metals

Approximately 40% of the total aerosols are of biogenic origin,and in some size ranges they are even dominating by number.Regarding resulting health effects,they can act themselves as biohazards,which cause for example allergic reactions,or they may serve as carriers for other particles,such as heavy metals.Unfortunately there is little information available about background concentration levels of biological aerosols in outdoor environments (Morawska,2001).To explore the role investigate of different anthropogenic and natural environmental influences,bioaerosol measurements were performed at four different sites in urban and rural regions of the Province of Salzburg,Austria,(i) in Salzburg City,where high total particle concentrations and medium bioaerosol concentrations were expected;(ii) at Salzburg University,where high concentrations of bioaerosols and medium particle concentrations were expected because of the adjacent botanical garden;(iii) in Tamsweg,a small town in an agriculture dominated region,where also high bioaerosol concentrations but only medium particle concentrations were expected;and (iv) in Badgastein,another small town,where the total particle numbers also the bioaerosol concentrations were expected to be low because of the specific climatic conditions there.
