Correlation of the size distribution of combustion aerosols with chemical information of emitted particles and the composition of the gas phase

Combustion processes are responsible for the emission of toxic pollutants into the environment.In addition to gaseous pollutants such CO,NO_x,SO_x and volatile organic compounds (for example polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,PAH) also particulate matter is emitted.Recent epidemiological studies focused on the effects of the fine and ultrafine particle fraction (<2,5 mum) on human health [Peters et al.(1997)].Furthermore soot particles from combustion processes are known to carry highly carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds like PAH.
