Combustion processes are responsible for the emission of toxic pollutants into the environment.In addition to gaseous pollutants such CO,NO_x,SO_x and volatile organic compounds (for example polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,PAH) also particulate matter is emitted.Recent epidemiological studies focused on the effects of the fine and ultrafine particle fraction (<2,5 mum) on human health [Peters et al.(1997)].Furthermore soot particles from combustion processes are known to carry highly carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds like PAH.
