摘要

The desert areas of the world are major sources for particles in the air.Estimates of the global contribution are in the range 25%.Windblown dust can be transported large distances.Since the particles are generated by erosion,they differ both in composition and size and shape from the other atmospheric aerosol particles.Obviously also their optical properties are different from the properties of the "usual" aerosol particles.During the VELETA2002 campaign (Alados et al.,this volume) a Sahara dust episode occurred towards the end of the period and it was possible to characterise the aerosol by a variety of instruments.
