摘要

Fugitive dust emissions from natural and anthropogenic activities contribute to high concentrations of PMzs and PMio in California's San Joaquin Valley during the fall months.The methods currently used to estimate these emissions rely on knowledge of the dry silt content of the soil,defined as the fraction of soil that passes through a 200 mesh (75 jam)screen.This parameter is not easily obtained,contributing uncertainty to the emissions estimate.Even more uncertainty is introduced in the empirical relationships between silt content and emissions.We have developed an index of PM^ and PM2.5 potential emissions that highly correlated to the percent sand or clay in the soil.The calculated index,based on sand and/or clay content from soil survey maps,has proven to be highly accurate compared to measured values.
