MULTIPLE FACTORS CONTRIBUTE to urinary tract infections (UTIs); common causes are aging and medications, especially in combination.Aging is associated with changes in kidney structure and muscle strength. The kidneys lose their ability to filter waste from the blood. Muscles in the ureters, bladder, and urethra weaken. These changes lead to increased urinary retention within the bladder, creating the environment for bacterial overgrowth and infection.
