At the SBA Council Meeting last November Enid Brown and John Durkacz floated the idea of holding a queen rearing event in Scotland. This was partly in response to the general need for more bees and partly to encourage the breeding of the native dark bee. True to their word they organised a highly successful queen rearing workshop over the weekend of 29 - 30 May 2010 at Dunfermline and West Fife Beekeeping Association's apiary. The workshop was led by Terry Clare, President of BIBBA (Pictured centre of the cover group, sporting a distinguished white beard) who spoke at the SBA Autumn Convention last year and who demonstrates queen rearing widely throughout the UK and Ireland. Almost 40 delegates attended, some for the first day that covered basic principles and methods of queen rearing and others both days or for the second day only when we looked at more advanced techniques.
