You can get there from here, but it isn't easy Monhegan Island, a tiny speck in the Atlantic Ocean 10 miles off the Maine coast, is accessible only by boat, which for most people means taking a ferry from 1 of just 3 ports. The nearest, the picturesque sleepy fishing village of New Harbor, Maine, is 50 minutes away, with at most 2 runs each day, the latest returning to the mainland at 3:15 pm. Smutty Nose, Drunken Gut, Washerwoman, Burnthead, Deadman Cove, Herring Gut-these are the evocative names of the geographical locales on and surrounding Monhe-gan. Although only 1 1/2 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, with a year-round population around 60, it contains 17 miles of hiking trails. There are no cars or paved roads.
