The first generation of drug-eluting stents has come under fire in recent months for inappropriate use in some patients with stable coronary artery disease and for possibly promoting late-event thrombosis. But stents remain essential tools for cardiologists treating patients with a variety of coronary problems, and researchers and manufacturers continue to design and test new versions, with the aim of improving outcomes while diminishing adverse events.
